Disposable pads contain an array of toxic and harmful chemicals that have been linked to certain cancers, hormone disruptions, reproductive issues, neurological disorders, as well as many other problems. This is because the vagina is the most permeable part of our body and the chemicals are readily absorbed in this area.
In August 2014 Women’s Voices for the Earth commissioned testing on menstrual pads. The certified laboratory STAT Analysis Corporation analyzed the products for volatile organic compound. The results of the testing indicate that both scented and unscented pads emit toxic chemicals, including chemicals identified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and the State of California Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens, and reproductive and developmental toxins. None of these chemicals are disclosed on the product by the manufacturer.
Exposure concerns
Most sanitary pads contain volatile organic compounds and phthalates and with this continued, long-term exposure a significant amount of these harmful chemicals could be absorbed via the genitals, according to a new study.
Better for the planet
From an environmental standpoint, Smartliners™ products contain absolutely no plastics, metals or harmful materials of any kind. On average, a woman will use between 14,000-17,000 pads or tampons throughout her lifetime. One typical disposable pad is equivalent to 4 plastic bags. This is all going into our landfills and water supply, and will not decompose for up to 500 years. Therefore multiply that by half of the world's population and imagine all that waste.
Better for your comfort
Smartliners™ Daily Liners and Period Pads use 100% certified organic cotton, contain no plastic or metal snaps and are fully reusable.
Smartliners™ washable & reusable period pads feature our Smartsorb™ super absorbent technology, which adds a comfortable and confident thin layer of added protection. It is also is made of 100% organic cotton which is better for you and kind to the environment.
Extremely comfortable with our EasyWing™ hook and loop closure, system Smartliners™ are easy to use, just place them in your underwear, and strap the wings in place with the velcro attachment. You're done!
Better for your budget
Once you build your full set of Smartliners™ sanitary period pads and daily panty liners, you'll have reliable menstrual protection for years to come. Smartliners™ pads are manufactured for long lasting comfort and effective absorbency. Washable period pads and daily panty liners are much more economical when compared to the cost of disposable products over your lifetime.
Remember those 14,000 to 17,000 disposables the average woman will
use? If she's a buying box of 20 tampons or pads at $7 per box, she'll
spend over $3,000* throughout her life.
It's kind of like equipping your kitchen with ceramic plates: it would be tremendously expensive (not to mention wasteful!) to continuously purchase disposable paper plates.
